First Ride!

My day yesterday...

6am:  Wake up in Chicago, it's -1 degrees out.  Head to the airport.

9am (CST) - 12pm (PST):   Sat folded up like an accordion in cramped airplane seat writing a report on my laptop because guy in front of me decides he needs to be leaned back in his seat ALL THE WAY FOR THE ENTIRE FLIGHT

12:00pm:  Land...YAYYYYY!!!!  It's 67 degrees out (that's more like it)

1:30 - 3:00pm-ish:  Come home and regroup, fiddle with report a little bit more..decide to be done with work for the day.

3:00pm:  BARN TIME!!!

3:30- 3:55:  ACTUALLY RIDE MY HORSE...ok, so it was just walking for 25min but he was soooo good.  There was insane construction going on at the barn and lots of scary things and he didnt bat an eyelash.  Overall he feels way more supple than I expected in his neck/poll/jaw...clearly the chiro visits have helped him a lot.  He was pretty stiff through his body and a little choppy.  I am chocking that up to 3 months off, not anything else.  He'll get back in the groove here.  He was also cranky.  I think he is really not loving or understanding this boring routine he's been in the past few months.

4:00:  Wonder why my horse is SO wasted looking and bumbling around...hmmm...did I give him too much ACE?

4:01:  Check the syringe I used...PANIC.  Wait, I used one of the fat syringes for Adequan by accident instead of the regular skinny syringe for ACE.  Used fat syringe tells me I gave him 2ml (instead of 2ccs which is what I do with the skinny syringe).  PANIC PANIC PANIC.

4:02:  Convinced my horse is looking like he's about to fall over or is having trouble breathing or is....fill in your doomsday here

4:03:  Call vet in hysteria...he chuckles and tells me 2ml IS 2ccs and it would take a lot more than that to kill my horse and that he will be/is COMPLETELY fine haveanicenightcrazylady.

4:03:  Feel stupid...and very blonde...

4:05:  Bust up laughing at my blonde moment and feel relieved I didnt make a major boo boo.  I've given ACE a million times, a million ways (IV, IM, Orally) but always with these little skinny syringes!  I can now sympathize with anyone in the medical profession who has ever thought they really messed a medicine up!

4:30:  Leave the barn and go have coffee with my friend Carrie, who is training to become a nurse, who also knows 2ml is 2ccs, she laughs at me

4:31:  Feel stupid...and very blonde...but I get over it and laugh with her

I dont spend this much on highlights for nothin' boys and girls!  But in all seriousness, because a potential mistake with medicine IS serious, consider this is a public service announcement to always go slow and think about exactly what you are doing and using when you're giving even the most routine medical/pharmaceutical care to your horse.

T-minus 5 hours until my next ride!  Toodles!

  1. I got part of the way down your post and wanted to tell you that a ml and cc are the same....and then you figured it out. That is too funny. Sorry you had to go through the stress though to find that out! I'm glad you are getting to ride Pongo again. I have missed hearing about your adventures.

  2. Haha, totally sounds like something I would do. Glad it all turned out ok (and thanks for telling me about the ml/cc thing).
